CORVETTE BODY RESTORATION

Installing a Front End (Front Clip):
  1. Remove the old front end.

  2. Grind and remove all glue off the substructure.

  3. Remove, clean and repair the inner fender panels.

  4. Grind clean the underneath areas of the new front end where the glue will be applied.

  5. Set front end on the car, press in place against the wind shield area. (test only).

  6. Remove the front end.

  7. Place the inner fender panels on the car using a couple of nut and bolts at the firewall to hold in place.

  8. Gluing the inner fender panels to the front end in the area of the hood lip is done last.

  9. Locate an area of level ground, garage floor, driveway, etc.

  10. Level two jack stands in position under the lower control arm shafts of the front suspension. Use spacers if needed.

  11. Set the car on the jack stands now.

  12. At this time place the metal fresh air hose screen holder in place on both fender panels with one temporary screw. The core support will later fasten to these. '58-'62 only.

  13. Once the frame is level, put the front end back on the car.

  14. Set the turn signal valance on a box to support the front end.

  15. Push back against the windshield area; push the front end to the rear of the car.

  16. Screw the front end down with one screw on each side of the fenders by the doors.

  17. Bolt the inner fender panels on with two nut and bolts on each side at the firewall. '63 - '67 inner fender panels will hang free (stay in place) at this time.

  18. Install one screw at the drip rail (each side of the hood opening) fastening the inner fender panel to the front end.

  19. Install core support. Fasten the core support to the inner fender panels. '63 - '67 install one screw fastening the inner fender panel to the front end through the drip rail at the sides of the hood opening.

  20. Mount the hood with the hinges in the area provided on the inner fender panels. 5/16 bolts will bolt through the fender panel into a nut plate.

  21. Position the hood until a general fit has been accomplished. If the hood is to high and no adjustment is left in the hinges, lift the front end. Use a short block (2x4) in the recess of the turn signal and use a floor jack to lift the front end. Lift slowly. The turn signal recess is the strongest area to lift by. '63 - '67 place the wood block directly on the turn signal housing.

  22. 22. Level the front end. Measure from the headlight opening to the ground both sides. Pick other areas to measure from also.

  23. Once the front end is level and fits, check the measurement from the door jamb to the headlights. The measurements should be the same at both sides.

  24. Once the front end fits and the hood fits the front end, bolt the inner fender panels to the core support.

  25. When you are satisfied that everything fits correct, glue the front end to the car. Glue portions one at a time. Do not try to glue all areas at one time. Start with the windshield area first.

  26. Glue the inner fender panels to the fenders last. Your side hood adjustment is done at this time. If one side of the fender edge is high, you can push the fender down until the fender edge and the hood edge match. Install a couple of screws to hold in place. Do the same to the other side. Once you are satisfied, glue one side at a time putting the screws back into the same holes, and add additional screws.

  27. Allow plenty of cure time before removing the screws. Remove all the screws that are fastening the front end to the car.

  28. I run a fiberglass bead under the fender well where the fender and the inner fender panels have been glued.

  29. Do a final fitting of the hood mounted on its hinges. Add materials where needed. (fiberglass - fillers - etc.).

  30. D.A. sand with 80-grit paper the entire outer shell everywhere before any spraying is done. Always work clean. Hands washed, clean rags etc.
